Disk read error

Hello,
I was trying to fix my sisters computer which was running very slow and freezing so I defragmented it then it shut off and when I turned it back on it came up the disk read error. What can I do to fix it with out having another computer to hook it up too? Ansd does that mean the computer is fried and can't be used anymore?

I suspect that the hard drive crashed. There is very little you can do w/o putting into another system. You could try to go to the HDD manufacturer's website to see if there is any downloadable diagnostic software. If there is, see if you can put it to flash drive, and then boot from the USB device.

The reason why the PC was slow might have been because the HDD was dying and defragging it might have dealt the killing blow.

If the HDD is dying/dead, you will have to replace it.
