From what I've read the D70s isn't much more than an incremental change, as
if Nikon *had* to respond to the Rebel XT. I think something like the
rumored D80 or D90 will be the real answer for Nikon fans. The D70 is a fine
camera, better than the original dRebel, and really closer to the 10D. I
think the D80 or D90 will compare closely with the 20D. The D50 will likely
be more
of a 'price point' entry than an answer to competition in terms of
performance.

Indeed, "The first will position itself as successor to the Nikon D70,
offering an upgraded version to this highly commended D-SLR" just
seems like a delay tactic, nothing substantial yet. Hope I'm going to
be proven wrong, competition is great.

Shipping an upgraded version with an "s" is normal Nikon practice.
That was done with the N8008/F801, the N90/F90, the Coolpix 900S, etc.
The upgrade is generally not a big deal, but it's usually not trivial
either. The D70's big limitation is the underlying 35mm SLR platform
and a more serious successor (D90 or D200 or whatever) will have to
be based on a more capable platform.

To me it seems that the D70s could have been accomplished with a firmware
update rather than a 'new' model introduction.

Hmmm, and just how does a firmware update increase the size of the lcd?

My point is that there just doesn't seem to be enough change to warrant a
new model designation. Were there any other 'hardware upgrades'?

It's still the same camera. Period.

As I said in my OP:
