I have an ASUS M6000 laptop which somehow came 2nd hand with
only 256mb of DDR333 memory. Would it be possible to put a 512mb
DDR400 module into it and run it with the 256mb dimm in it?
thanks :)

Probably. A DDR400 module should be able to drop down to 333 speeds without issue, so the only real issue would be how much RAM that particular model can support. I don't have the specs in front of me, but if it only came with 256MB of RAM, it's not inconceivable that it was only designed to support 512MB total.
