My current specs are

Pentium D 2.8 ghz
asus motherboard asus pk5pl-am
corsair 450vx psu
msi gtx 550ti gpu
2gb ram ddr2

To eliminate the bottleneck i am planning to go for Intel i3 2100 or Intel i3 550.Also will my current PSu handle the i3 processors and GPU?

Thanks in advance

Your PSU is fine for any CPU with that graphics card. Be aware that you will need to get a new motherboard and RAM to use an i3, no i3 will work on an LGA775 board. The i3 2100 is the best choice, as it is on the current LGA1155 socket, which does have a future upgrade path. i3 550 is a bit slower than the 2100, and is on LGA 1156, which is a discontinued socket.

You need a new mobo for either one of those upgrades. Your mobo is 775 socket the i32100 is sandy bridge or 1155 socket, and the i3-550 is is 1156 socket.

I advise the i32100 as the other i3 socket is essentially dead now the i3 2100 is a newer cpu. this upgraded allows for you to later upgrade to a quad i5 2500k, or a new ivy bridge cpu pending what mobo you pick

psu is fine

what bottleneck?
the core i3 will be a hude upgrade over the pentium d. here's a chart of core i3 2100 vs pentium EE 955 3.4 ghz.

your current psu should be able to handle core i3.
between the 550 and 2100, the 2100 would be better. 550 belongs to intel's old lga 1156 platform and it is old. intel isn't making any new cpus for that platform, moreover, they eol'ed a lot of old cpus to make room for new ivb cpus. core i3 2100 belongs to newer lga 1155 platform, built on 32 nm process, has better igp that old core i3's (if it matters). has lower tdp but higher performance. it is also a capable gaming cpu that can stand toe-to-toe with older quad cores and some newer ones. the core i3 supports 1.5v ddr3 1333 ram.

Thanks all.Yes I am planning to buy a new mobo and ram too.Kindly suggest a low cost mobo to support i3 2100 and my 550ti gpu.

What's your budget? If it's $300, get i3 2120 and an $100 Z68 mobo
If it's $400, get a i5 2500k and a $170 MoBo like Asus ROG Maximus Z68

if you're building a new pc, so you will find better advice in the new build section - use the new build form if necessary. if you're buying only the motherboard, then the motherboard section. open a new thread in the appropriate section, you'll find more help there. as for motherboard for core i3, any one with h61, h67 or z68 chipset will do. but that depends on other factors like case, budget, preference etc.

Why would he get that Gen 3? Gen 3 PCIe barely make any different from PCIe 2 when gaming, PCIe 3 have bigger effect "if" your doing CS5.5 or so...

Because it supports ivybridge, and supports pcie 3.0 graphics cards.

Every Z68 or P67 will support Ivy Bridge, just not PCIe 3.0... PCIe isn't a big improvement over PCIe 2.0, PCIe 4.0 is said to double the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0(Should be a big improvement in PCIe) in 2014

pcie 3.0 just came out. so the next pcie standard will be available (not spec announcement) in 4 years. that makes it around 2015-16. features and specs might be announced in 2014.
pcie 3.0 does make difference in tasks that require that sort of bandwidth. gaming isn't the only thing done with a pc.

remember you will also need to buy ddr3 as well

i dont think any core i3 boards support ddr2 anymore
