I have some rather basic questions about the ATX 2.03 spec.

I’m putting together a P4 system, and one of the things I need to upgrade is my power supply. The Asus P4T motherboard I’m using apparently comes with a metal plate to which you anchor the heatsink, so upgrading the case to be 2.03 compliant isn’t necessary. So here are my questions:

1) Will a 2.03 power supply physically fit into a 2.01 case with no modifications?
2) Do ALL 2.03 power supplies have the two additional connectors that plug onto the motherboard? There are lots of power supplies that are listed as 2.03, but they only say ‘Athlon approved’ not ‘P4 approved’. This makes me nervous.
3) In many of the reviews I read, it was mentioned that a 2.01 power supply would still work. How is this possible? Are the two extra connectors on the motherboard just left open?

Thanks for any input.

I don't really know, but my 2.03 p/s has a bunch of extra funny looking connectors on it that don't plug into any m/b i've ever seen (never seen a P4 m/b 'tho).

Check here for some pics including power connectors:

Thanks for the input. I've found an Enermax 431w power supply that I'm going to try.

I just have to ask.
Why are you putting together a P4 system?
Too much spare cash?
Got the parts for free?

I went to that link. Noiseless? I find that a little hard to believe!

The Enermax 431 is pretty darn quiet! I opened up the case after installing to see if the second fan was actually running since the darn thing puts out almost no air :( It is definately less noisy than the hard drive.

Oh, just what I need in my fully loaded mid-tower. No exhaust!

As for why a P4: I don't have one yet. I have 4 systems and try to keep them pretty diversified. That, and I just wanted to play around with one.

You need a case fan with an enermax power supply, that's all (they move some air but not much). They are noiseless 'tho.

Depends on the case.

>2) Do ALL 2.03 power supplies have the two additional >connectors that plug onto the motherboard? There are lots >of power supplies that are listed as 2.03, but they only >say ‘Athlon approved’ not ‘P4 approved’. This makes me >nervous.
If they say Athlon approved it will most likely be safe for the Pentuim. The reason behind Athlon approvals is that Athlon processors are very finicky with the other system components. Some just won't work with an Athlon, so AMD made an approval list. If your components aren't on the list, you are basicallly taking a gamble. Probably the best power supply you can get is an Enermax Whisper series here: http://directron.com/fceg351pve.html
You can't go wrong with that.

3) In many of the reviews I read, it was mentioned that a 2.01 power supply would still work. How is this possible? Are the two extra connectors on the motherboard just left open?
It may work, just not recommended and could end up damaging your CPU and/or mobo.

I Found this on Maximum PC:

It's and adapter from the HD connector to the P4. It's onlt $8, so if your on a budget. Probably not the case if your buying a P4 system though.
