Does Crossfire need two x8 or x16 connections?

Im fairly new at this, and building one of my first computers. I want it to be able to handle crossfire, but im not sure if i just need two PCIe 2.0 connections, and if x16 and x4 is ok. Thanks

You want at minimum a board that runs the two PCIe X16 slots at X8 X8 speed with two cards installed.

Here is an article on the subject from over a year ago. This compared a couple different motherboard platforms. You'll notice that x4 does hurt performance, and under at least some platforms, it's a very large hit in performance and in others it's not as bad.
