Hiy

here is my rig as it is now.
amd phenom ii x4 955 - 3.2 GHz - running at 3.8GHz
6 GB or RAM - DDR3
gainward gtx 580 1.5gb
motherboard - ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 - AMD 880G - Socket AM3
PSU - 950 wat

I was thining about getting rid of the motherboard and the CPU and getting a core i7 with a new motherboard since the mobo i have now does not support a core i7 CPU right? I can get rid of those 2 things and keep everything else. But i dont know what motherboard to get.

I'm not a hardcore gamer so i dont think i will need a high end core i7 cpu. maybe the core i7 920 2.66 GHz Processor.

What do you think?

You can get a fx 4100 for cheaper, i own a fx 8120 which is $210 on newegg.com its great!
You can really get any fx CPU's beacause there just as good, also if you buy a fx get a MSI 990XA-GD55 (newegg.com Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... ), no matter what people say a fx is great for gaming!

What you have is fine.

What is it you think that you will gain with an i7?

it wouldn't really be worth upgrading right now, and if you were to upgrade you would have to go to at least a 2500k and even then i dont think it would be worth the money. ivy bridge will be out in Q2 so i would wait and see how it performs before even considering an upgrade

i7920 is "old" tech - As stated i5-2500k is the accepted "gold" standard as far as gaming goes. an AMD 955 with GTX580 is pretty sweet and will do just fine for now - you can get better graphics but I would wait to see how everything settles with the new offerings from AMD & in 6 months, nvidia.

Well, I consider going from a nice 955 to a FX 4100 a downgrade...

you bought a 580 and you aren't a hardcore gamer?

anyways. Why are you bother upgrading?

also its not worth it at all to upgrade to a 920 as you'd get barely any performance. The only things that will run faster would be hyperthreaded programs. Also an new i5 would be faster than the 920.

You aren't really getting cpu bottle necked from your current rig, i don't see a reason to upgrade... you will get nothing out of it. You could try and go for 4 ghz, though. What's your heat sink?
