Hello,
I had a search but could not find a thread that actually answered this question. I recently recieved a Zalman Z9 plus case and installed my existing system, the only trouble is the pre-installed side fan hums due to the mesh on the panel. Would moving the fan to the location on the base give better airflow?

i apologise if i missed the thread when i searched.

Regards,
James

I've found that if you put intake fans in the front of your case and the Bottom of your case, and exhaust fans on the Top and Rear you will get excellent airflow. You have to remember Hot air goes up. So if you put fans at the top the hot air can be expelled much quicker.

the only problem with the base is that it'll pick up a lot more dust than the side so you'll have to keep an eye on that and i would suggest raising it off the ground a fair bit to gie the fan a bit more airflow :D  And that way it wont pick up hardly as much dust :)

If you are going to blow air into the case, dust will accummalate in it alot quicker. In this case, depending on how dusty your room is, you might want use the fans with some (reusable/washable) filters.

As previously mentioned, make sure to grab some dust filters for all intake fans. Otherwise you'll find yourself constantly needing to clean your PC.

The side intake fan is likely to be more effective than a bottom intake fan.

Front/Side Intake
Rear/Roof Exhaust

To avoid the hum from the vibration on the mesh panel, grab yourself some rubber/foam washers to place between the fan bracket and the case. This will eliminate most/all vibration on the case.
