I can no longer get my 2nd pc on my home lan to automatically get an ip address in the 192.168.0.x range... it skips the automatic process and gives me the private ip address...

This is what I think happened... I uninstalled the chipset drivers on the host computer and rebooted when the client computer was turned on and connected... I then reinstalled the chipset drivers on the host ICS computer, including the onboard ethernet driver, and the client computer has been messed up ever sense... I have a 3rd computer that was not turned on at the time, and it still works fine... I have not been able to get it to work after many hours of struggling with it... the two computers are the ones listed below...

You have some good money invested in your computers.. how about a simple router for $50 (Linksys BEFSR41) to replace the ICS and be done with the problem?

Your internet might have picked up the mac address on that other computer which is why it's getting the private address since you uninstalled the chipset thus removing the host from the connection. Meaning the next computer in line, your client, was the only thing available for the private IP. You might want to set it up to have your host to be host again, call your ISP and have them refresh the MAC address or wait 4 hours and it should start magically working again.
But honestly, just buy the router, have it dish out DHCP, run your cables to that thing and be done with it.. It would be so much simplier and less stressful.

I have not had a problem before... I am still using dial-up... and I have three computers that all can access the Internet from my host... I am using a simple 5-port hub...

No... really... how do I reset this thing and get it to generate an IP address in the 192.168.0.x range... this private 169 IP thing sucks... the computer just will not do it...

It works when I give it an IP address such as 192.168.0.2 but not with ICS... I was playing FarCry over my LAN this afternoon... but when I set it back to auto... it givs me the 169 bit...

I'd stick with static IPS in an ICS situation. Will it really be that painful to assign your comps a static IP?

I just have never used static IP addresses for ICS before...

btw, the same thing happened to my 3rd computer last night about 2 a.m. We were playing a game online, and the connectivity just quit, and this morning, I am getting a 169 address on that computer as well...

what is needed to get a static IP for ICS?

Just give the computers a static IP and make the default gateway the ip of your ICS computer (default is 192.168.0.1). Make the DNS servers your ISP's dns servers. You can find those by typing ipconfig /all at a command prompt when connected to the internet (on the ICS comp). Look for DNS Servers.

To give a static IP right click on my network places, go to properties, right click on your lan connection, go to properties, select "internet protocol (TCP/IP)", click properties, move selection to specify an ip.
