A few months ago I had the idea to finally join an online game rental
service after being so pleased with my Netflix subscription. I
researched about 20 different game rental sites (yeah, there's that
many) before finally choosing Gamelender. I have a GCN, GBA, and a
Dremcast so I wanted a place that supported all. I have experienced
nothing but awesome service for a price that Gamefly can't touch. Here
are some reasons why:

1) I get THREE games at a time for $21.99. (though now their price
went up a tad, I was able to ask for 1 year membership and lock in
this deal after being a member for one month.)

2) They're the only site that has Dreamcast AND GameBoy Advance in
addition to PS2, Gamecube, and XBOX. They also are basically the only
site they will rent you N64, Genesis, or and even older! They offer
over 6,600 games.

3) After I joined, they overhauled the website tremendously, it now
looks very professional and works great. There's email confirmation of
sending and receiving games, a new rating system, realtime
availibility info on almost every title, etc. They say forums are
coming soon too, though I'm not holding my breath on that one.

3) I only once so far in about 25 rentals had to deal with one
unplayable disc. It wasnt scratched, it just would not work in my DC.
I told them, and they shipped a replacement title right away and told
me they ordered a replacement for the game disc. (since DC is not too
hot nowadays, they only have one of each DC title in stock, which to
my surprise, isn't really a big problem in terms of availability)

3) I complained that the queue only held 65 entries, so two weeks
later, they took my advice and expanded it to 99!

4) They don't have insane "we charge you $60 if you lose the game"
policies like RedOctane. In fact, they seem pretty carefree about it.
Plus their GCN and DC selection wipes the floor with RedOctane.

5) I'm on the East Coast, and shipping time from California is
surprisingly reasonable, less than a week.

Some things to know: They don't send you the manuals, and they of
course have prepaid return shipping, and use sturdy cardboard inserts.
Their site it not as spiffy as GameFly yet, and you might have to wait
a little longer for the hottest titles, but they're a much better
value with better selection. If you want to rent games for your DC in
addition to your newer systems, this is the ONLY place to go.

I would seriously advise trying them before forking out for GameFly,
which is way more expensive and limiting. GameFly is their only real
competition as the other sites just don't hold a candle to GameLender
right now.

If you're not actually a company shill who is spamming the newsgroups,
why would you (as a mere gaming consumer) care so much about a game
rental company that you would write 50 lines of what amounts to ad copy?

A: Because it disturbs the logical flow of a message.
Q: Why is top posting a sloppy form of writing?

Because he was actually trying to be nice and give us the heads-up on a
good site to rent from?

Nope. The from name doesn't appear on my newsserver in any of the
spammed groups for the 3.5 months the server covers, except in the
message at issue. He's not a part of the community. groups.google.com
only shows the email address showing up only in this thread, never even
in any other newsgroup. It's spam or a message from someone too stupid
to realize a changed address and identity on this message will make it
look like spam.

You realize if you look at his headers that his address comes from a
roadrunner account; roadrunner is not a service that allows misc. people to
create web-based email. This is someone's personal account; not the sort of
thing generally used for spamming. And, given that I /haven't/ seen this
person post before, I would presume it /not/ to be spam - most spammers
return in cyclical patterns to toss up their ads over and over again.

I think it is obvious that this is a poorly executed, cross-posted marketing
trash.

Well, there's no reason to assume the email address is valid for anyone
involved with the message (altho the path appears to have it coming from
a RR source). However, for someone getting kickbacks from the
game-rental-service-I-will-now-never-use-because-of-evil-marketing-practices,
a real email address is a useful identifier to confirm they are doing
what they said in exchange for free service, or whatever the kickback
is. The sender could even use a subaccount that they don't care about
and use as a spam dump
http://www.nycap.rr.com/newcustomers/
And for targeted spam like this, the sender will claim it's not spam,
because of the underhanded nature of the ad. Well, I've forwarded it to
RR anyway and asked them to examine the lack of any posting history and
terminate the sender's account.

And, given that I /haven't/ seen this
> person post before, I would presume it /not/ to be spam - most spammers
> return in cyclical patterns to toss up their ads over and over again.

That is not true for targetted commercial email. Sure, you may get 50
messages over a week about C list celebrity naked, but that's universal
trojan spam. This is almost certainly someone connected to the
game-rental-service-I-will-now-never-use-because-of-evil-marketing-practices.
They're smart enough to know that an obvious ad isn't going to be
believed or liked. They're not smart enough to realize that an extended
thread discussing the underhanded thing they are trying to do, the type
of thing that will meet criteria of searches for words like complaint
complaints Gamelender.com gamelender, is bad for them.
And why are the two people coming to the defense of this RR spammer both
from Roadrunner?

The guy mentions that they raised the price and he got a hook up on an older
deal, then he tells about how one of the 20+ cd's he's gotten didn't work...
May not be spam

In parantheses, after putting the old price out there.

> then he tells about how one of the 20+ cd's he's gotten didn't work...

Again, "street team" marketing is laden with artifice. This statement
pulls the sting of failed games by bringing up that when there is a non
working game (inevitable in this type of thing), the company is compliant.

> May not be spam

There is an off chance it may not be spam. However, the preponderance of
the evidence is that it is in fact spam. A total lack of posting history
for a testimonial poster is basically prima facia evidence that the
message is spam.

And yet another support email from a Roadrunner address, and the third
in this thread including the original post from the twister.nyc.rr.com
domain. What is with you guy/s?

Roadrunner happens to be a popular cable internet service. Unless you think
we're all various posting accounts from the same spammer.

Because a lot of people were left without a rental company after
Triggerfingers sold out to GPlay and we were all looking for a new site. I
thought it was a helpful review. Why do you feel the need to criticize?
Just don't read it if you don't like it.

What in that post leads you to believe he is spamming? I frequent these
newsgroups and have never seen Gamelender spam the groups. Or any other
rental company that I can recall (though some may have slipped past me).

I planned on posting a review of whichever rental company I decided to go
with. I suppose you would discount mine as spam too, and go tattle on me to
my service provider. Get a life.

Hmm, my three messages explaining this apparently weren't enough for
you. As mentioned, the message is long and quite positive. It is also
cross posted. The post is especially long considering the name of the
poster is not immediately familiar to me (and I read all four of the
groups cross posted to). At that point I checked for the poster's
posting history. The months of retention on my newserver showed nothing
from the poster Mindphaser in the groups posted to. Google Groups showed
no appearance of the email address on Usenet outside of this thread.
So, it is theoretically possible that someone who has never before
posted under a given name, and who has an unmunged email address, would
choose to make their first post an abnormally long rave for a commercial
service. But not very likely.

You have a posting history in at least the Gamecube group. I still might
be suspicious that it might be street team marketing, but since you've
been here for awhile, it wouldn't be obvious as it is in this case
(that's part of why street team marketing is evil). Now, actually, I am
more likely to assume you are part of a shill program from them as you
are trying to shout down reasonable arguments that the original post was
marketing with no substantive counter argument. I'll be sure to forward
any messages from you in support of Gamelender to your ISP.
Ah, I see that instead of simply asking why I would think he was
spamming (which was explained in my first post in this thread, and in my
second and third posts in this thread I answered James Stein and Magoo's
arguments as to why the mail might not be spam) you've gone on to insult
me as well. Feel free to take the insult you find most personally
loathsome and offensive and assume I have directed it at you, your
children, and your children's children.

It is an abnormal amount of messages to be coming from RR, all on the
"gee, I don't think this suspicious message is spam" side. But no, I
don't think you're all the same spammer. T.Turner's mail server isn't
twister. You and Magoo use different versions of Outlook Express.
Mindphaser's account comes from Agent tho, and Agent's free enough for a
hit and run street team message.

Well I suppose it's often impossible to tell for sure, but the original
post sort of _felt_ like spam: (1) the breathless-enthusiasm level was set
just a little too high, (2) it was also suspiciously long and was oddly
heavy on the "bullet lists of features" (something marketing types _love_
but which rarely seem to show up in reviews by real users).

So who knows, but I wouldn't start sending gamelender tons of orders based
on this "review"...

Ted, you obviously are one of those people who thinks he's smarter than
everyone else. The newsgroups are rife with your kind. Taking your
personal time to do some search on a poster's name and determine that he/she
is a spammer just because he hasn't posted before doesn't make you a super
sleuth.

Go on, Ted, keep hiding behind your computer and dishing out your petty
little threats. I'm sure it's the only way you can assert yourself. If you
take me telling you to get a life (as opposed to spending way too much time
determining if someone is or is not a spammer based on ONE post they made)
as an insult, then I think I struck a chord. For you to run with that and
attack not only me, but any children or grandchildren I might have, just
proves that you are as low a life form as one might suspect.

Bye, Ted. You have a nice life--once you get one, that is.

These are certainly some good points. I was planning on trying Gamelender
anyway, after doing my own research. So I'll see. Unfortunately I can't
let the rest of you know about my experiences because self-appointed
newsgroup cop and spam ferret "Ted" has threatened to report me to my ISP if
I post a review of them. He has me shaking in my boots ; ).

Oh, man. This cracks me up LARGE, and I imagine the support team at RR
is going to frame this one.

Did you get beat up in school a lot, Ted? Just curious.

With a note to be vigilant about street team complaints.
