okay ive tryed once before to no success on a previous thread so im starting a entire new one with further details and specs. im looking to upgrade my current all stock compaq presario desktop, model cq5600y link below

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppo [...] peId=12454

this states that i can use athlon x2-x3-x4 cpu chips, first off does this mean 'athlon' because im not aware of any 'athlon i' cpu's. seeing as it already has a athlon ii 170u processor, im guessing it supports alot of athlon ii cpu's
my main concern is what ill be buying to replace the 170u cpu. im going to get a [athlon ii x4 640 propus] since it meets the thermal standards of 95watt. as for the bios, my bios is dated about ten days after the release of the x4 640 propus and 170u processor. "both the current 170u AND x4 640 propus were released at the same date" so according to that, i dont see any issue if i were to use the x4 640.

second bit of info, is a HP desktop with the same exact make and model MB i currently have, yet specifically comes with the same cpu im looking to put into mine, see link below. seeing as both my compaq and that model HP have the same exact model MB and even same chipset and pci and ram slots, with a near few month difference between release date of my cq5600y, im guessing the HP model below is more of a higher end PC then from my compaq.

so all in all, would my cq5600y pc with the same narra5 pegatron m2n68-la MB work with the AMD Athlon X4 640 'propus' CPU?
both MB specs state athlon x2-x4 not 'athlon ii' even though both desktops come with athlon ii's. i greatly and sincerly appricate help

Since it says it supports Phenom II, I think it will support the Athlon II X4 640.

Make sure that you have your BIOS updated.

ive done much looking for bios updates and havent managed to come accross a whole lot, i dont know a whole lot about how bios works, but i do know the bios date is newer then the release date of the current cpu as well as the athlon 640. version 6.00 phoniex award bios i think it was 5/10/2010 around that date. im assuming that version would support the 640 since it was made around the same time as my 170u, HP's site doesnt have any downloads regarding to a newer bios, but if you know of anything newer for mine, please feel free to let me know, i appricate it :) im a newcomer to this but a fast learner.
