Hello,

I looking to buy a new monitor and was thinking about the Dell U2711.

http://www.dell.com/us/p/dell-u2711/pd?refid=monitor-dell-u2711&baynote_bnrank=0&baynote_irrank=0&~ck=baynoteSearch

This screen has 2560 x 1440 resolution.

I also like to buy a 4-port KVM switch to hook-up 4 computers (2 desktops and 2 laptops).

I found this:
http://www.aten.com/products/productItem.php?model_no=CS1784A

For this to work at 2560 x 1440 I need to have DVI Dual link capable devices. My desktops handle this fine but my laptops concerns me a bit.

I have displayport but as I see it it is not capable of converting to DVI Dual link without an adapter.

So I found these two:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815158198

And now I'm almost lost in all of this :p
Is there anyone who has tried this or something similar?
Is this going to work?

Thanks for your advice
Regards
Anders

Very, very unique issue however you seem to have the right train of thought.

Get the Newegg converter, as 138 pounds is a hell of a lot more expensive than $108 USD.

This SHOULD work. You're actively converting the signal, which means there shouldn't be signal issues coming to the KVM. KVM won't know any better, so it should display it just fine.

Good luck!

Yes, maybe it's a unique issue but I hope someone out there has tested something like this and have som feedback.

I'd def. go with the cheaper converter as they both seem to do the trick.

One other thing I was thinking about is whats going to happen if use the analog signal from my laptop and send it trough the DVI (using adapter). Then this signal needs converting inside the KVM switch to work or?

The switch has DVI-I (integrated - digital and analog) inputs/outputs.

Any thoughts on that?

Starting from a good signal and going down is always better than going from a lower signal and upconverting.

I would worry that the signal output from the VGA (analog) instead of the DisplayPort wouldn't be enough with the active converter to look proper on your nice large res monitor. I'd stick to using DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort to connect to your KVM switch.

Yes, you are right...but I wondering if even "can" convert a analog signal to a digital one?

The HDMI standard can only support up to 1920x1080 so it's not an option. Diplayport can function with the adapter (I hope).

Does anyone use this high resolution with a KVM switch or has any experience with the Aten CS1784A?
