Really obvious question but can someone tell me how to turn off the purple pointer in the middle of the keyboard? I keep knocking it when I'm typing and it's driving me mad!

One would assume you have a laptop (probably an IBM ThinkPad or a Toshiba
Satellite). This has nothing whatsoever to do with XP and suggest you RTFM
that was supplied with the unit.

IBM Thinkpads use black or red.. early black and reds were just a rubber
top.. then they changed the reds to a type with a rough surface that
captures dead skin cells.. yuck..

If it is a Synaptics device, I'm pretty sure all of their latest
drivers allow you to disable the pointer.

Go to the Control Panel - Mouse and check out the settings there.

I used to have the exact same problem with one of my older laptops
that had a pointer-thingy. I HATE those things. :-)

Pointer thingy?.. in BIGBLUEspeak, that would be a TrackPoint® pointer
thingy..
