Pc boots but no output to monitor

hi there, this is my first PC build and although the PC POST's there is nothing onscreen. There is one short beep when turned on indicating the POST. I have tried both HDMI and VGA connection but both say no signal. I wore an anti static wrist band at all times so i know the hardware is not faulty. I have gone through http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/261145-13-perform-steps-posting-boot-video-problems but still cannot resolve the issue. I can hear the hard drive spinning, all the correct cables are plugged in. is anyone able to assist?
