My power supply has an 8 pin cpu power connecter but the motherboard only has a 4 pin connector. Will only using half of the 8 pin connector affect the 2500k cpu?

No as long as the board powers up you're fine.

No. You didn't say what kind of motherboard you have, but my Gigabyte motherboard manuals say that you need the 8 pin CPU power plug for CPU's with over a 130 watt TDP. Max TDP of an i5-K is 95 watts.

You will have no problem powering your CPU.
