No display on hp model m9550f elite ati radeon hd 4850

[Solved] My monitor display was fine last night. This morning it says it is in standby mode and tells me to re-boot or touch the mouse or keyboard. I did all three and nothing happens. The monitor has a VGA input and DVI input. The PC, a HP 9550f elite has an ati radeon hd 4850 with two dvi outputs. I plugged the monitor into another pc using the VGA input and it works fine, so I think the problem is the graphics card. I cannot connect another monitor to the m9550f because I do not have another monitor with dvi input. I want to know: 1. can I replace the graphics card myself? 2. how do I know what graphics card to buy?

I solved the problem. When I disconnected the DVI cord from the PC, I noticed my kitty kat had chewed on the cord. The wires did not show through, but the cord was definitely chewed. I found the VGA to DVI converter that came with the PC, used the VGA connection and the monitor works fine.
