i know this is probably been asked a dozen or more times anyways im about to step into the quad core world and i have a few questions i have a gigabyte ga-m57sli-s4 revision 2.0 with the latest fhl bios and before i buy my possessor i want to double check to make sure i can use it. im currently going with a amd phenom am3 955 black edition. according to gigabytes website i can install this processor is this true. i have no choice but to upgrade. id upgrade to 6 cores but i dont see where my board supports it.

windows 7 64 bit
gigabyte ga-m57sli-s4
amd athlon x2 5000 (my weak point)
8 gigs of ram ddr2
radeon 6870(hoping to xfire)
psu 750 watt

Check out this link, it's cpu support list for the motherboard that you listed. If you scroll down to the AM3 section, it lists the cpu you linked as well as the hexa cores as compatible to the motherboard.

You need to get the 95W version otherwise it wont work as shown on the CPU support list. Wouldnt it be time to get a new MOBO with the thought that you can upgrade in the future

Maybe this motherboard might suit your need but is a DDR3. You can get the AMD FX's on here so if you get even further into gaming or whatever you have the option.

thanks for the quick replys i know it would be cheaper probably to get a new motherboard and probably update the whole system but this is going to be a temp situation for now knowing that i can get the cpu very cheap and im saving for a new build for the most part. i was concerned about the wattage(95) but as posted its on the list of supported cpus and id like to use the xfire.

found this. seems im not the only one that has asked about he specs and his system is a bit similar. i havent been able to locate a 95 watt version but what would be the best possible processor for my current setup.
