Should I upgrade to a i7 3930k?

i use my pc for gaming....my current specs are:
gtx 580
i7 950
6gb ram

i plan to upgrade to the 600 series gpu but for now is it worth upgrading the 950 to a 3930k, will i notice a SIGNIFICANT difference?

Depends on what you are doing. For example: Gaming, photoshop, 3d apps. Also just overclock your 950 and you will get more performance.

Even an i7 2600k is overkill for gaming, let alone the hexacore (I believe, although, I could easily be wrong) i7 39whateveritis. (<---- whateveritis sounds like an odd disease.....)

Anyway, the i5 2500k is easily good enough for any game, espcially since you can overclock it to above 4.0 GHz, I believe into the region of 5.0 Ghz is possible, but not recommended....

I don't see the point from a gaming point of view. Although if you just so happened to be starting up an oil exploration business and needed insane graphics and processing power then the nvidia quadro plex 7000 (http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/product-quadroplex-7000-uk.html) and the i7 3930k is just what you need....

But I somehow doubt that.

Not a gamer, But others have indicated not enough (to no) performance gain to upgrade.

I had a I5-750 Oced to 3.2 GHz and for what I mostly do an upgrade to the I5-2500k was not cost effective (based on CPU performance), However I did upgrade as I wanted the ON Board support for SATA III and For USB3.

Most games are still designed for 2 cores. Games designed for 3 or 4 core are coming slowly but surely. It becomes more difficult to design a game to use more cores. The more cores used the more complex it can become to develop a games. Especially when trying to efficiently use more cores.

if you have the 950 i7 then no its fine for everything no point, BUT if you have a smaller older chip and want to upgrade then yeah its worth it.

i upgraded my AMD 1090T and went intel for 3930K and the Asus Rampage 4 Extreme and just swapped over my current ram and graphics cards and its been like having a full new pc got alittle extra ram and boooom maxing out on all games in eyefinity with not even a hint of fps isues or other problems.

Again, it really depends, it is like having car has 500hp and 140hp? Both get you to work and home, in the end 140hp will save you gas, but when you feel like robbing a bank and need a get away car? I bet you with you had that 500hp under the hood. I play games too, and I upgraded from a i7 950 to 3930K, yes, I spent $1.5 k on the whole upgrade and sold my current parts for aboiut $400. So my upgrade was about $1100. But trust me when you needed it and you know it is there for you is priceless. Trust me....

A six-core super expensive i7 is super uneccesary (<--- spelling) for gaming. Even a dual core would get you through.

Just overclock your current one a bit and call it a day. If anything, up your graphics capabilities.

No. A 3930K strictly for games is a waste in any case. You're looking at $800 easy for processor and mobo for an extremely small improvement

Getting a 3930K is only worth it if you do other things besides gaming that can utilize all 6 cores and 12 threads. I wouldn't waste money on it if I were you. I don't think you would see significant performance gains unless you did other things besides gaming.
