PCI Express 6 pin to 8 pin Power Adapter Cable question

Last response: in Components

Hi started my new build yesterday but hit a hurdle in that my PSU does not have an 8 pin lead for the GPU. The GPU requires a 6 and 8 pin.

After doing a little research it looks like you can by an adaptor to convert a pci express 6 pin power lead to an 8 pin.

I have also found 2x4-Pin Molex -> 8-Pin PCIe.

Would one of these cables be ok to use? Would they damage the PSU or GPU at all? Would the GPU be getting the power that it requires? I don't want to risk it at all so if it's not going to do the job ill buy a new PSU.

My PSU is a Corsair HX520W

and the GPU I am using is Asus ATI Radeon HD 6950 DirectCU II 2048MB GDDR5

Thanks for any help

Matt

Your card should have come with an adaptor. If not, the E-Bay item is what you are looking for. That's a 3 rail 12V PSU and modular. Use the adaptor on one of the unused or least used 12V rails.
