Are there USB hubs which will allow 2 computers to share USB devices plugged into it? My desktop and notebook are networked; I can "share" the printer with the other machine via the network, but I don't think I can do this with the scanner. Any suggestions?

No, because the USB devices would have to be designed to send data multiplexed, or on 2 different lines at the same time, in case both computers requested data at slightly different times.
