Graphics Card and New Power Supply

I recently got a deal on a Gateway DX4850-45

Intel® Core™ i5-2300
6GB DDR3 SDRAM;
1TB SATA Hard Drive
4X BD-ROM
Crappy integrated graphics card
300W Power Supply

I didn't realize how power hungry graphics cards have become. I had just assumed with the stock setup and a $170 to $250 ATI or Nvidia card I would be set.

I was a primarily a console gamer but with this generation dragging on I would like to start playing the more superior version of these games on the PC. I have a 1920 x 1080 monitor.

What are your suggestions on a graphics card and my power supply situation so that I can game at 1080p with graphic settings superior to X360 PS3?

I went with a 500w PSU and a EVGA GTX 550 TI 2GB.
