my specs:
HP
2.4 ghz intel 2 quad core q660
750 sata hd
4 gb of ram
gts 250 video card

My question simply is, would I benefit from upgrading from my current video card to say a GTX 560 or something around that area wihout being a victim the "bottleneck" with my CPU and ram?

that will bottleneck a 560, but much less so if you overclock it to around 3 GHZ or more

It's a standard HP motherboard, there is no overclocking. Will you see a benefit from a 560 if you play at 1080p? Yes absolutely. Though keep in mind, you will most likely have to change your power supply if you are still using the HP one.

I appreciate the quick reply. In your opinion what would be a reasonable solution to up the power of the system without scrapping it? I also have a 650 watt PSU

Could use some more info on the PSU. Not all PSUs are made equal.

Suggest you read this guide: http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] ,3018.html to see how expensive you want to get on video. Use the table on the last page and follow the '3 tiers or you won't see a thing' rule.

You can also use this site to compare the 250 to newer cards http://www.hwcompare.com/3489/gefo [...] 850-256mb/

Then consider the LENGTH of the video card -- a GTX260 is a very tight squeeze in my HP case. Video card makers use custom PCBs to have shorter/longer/wider/ etc. differentiation. Example, look at the card lengths in this article on HD6950s in teh first pager photo (scroll down) http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] ,3041.html

For power, 600watts covers anything there. Antec good brand.

For CPU bottleneck, the Q6600 is nice and is considered a good overclocker. Suggest follow ScrewySqrl's advice and overclock. 4GB ram is still plenty, it's also really cheap to add later if you start to see paging. (To overclock an HP you can't sue the BIOS, instead try setfsb (google it). http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 059-3.html http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/

Thx. I'm aware of the space unfortunate because it is cramped in the HP case. I know this is not a simple question, because like a pc, there are alot of o

Oops wrong button. U get the idea. I wanted to see if
My CPU was still decent. I may have over shot it with the 560. Maybe something cheaper. I have to pick a card that is no longer and wider than my GtS, or I am screwed.

You can find a card that will fit and run great. Spend money for a nice card and plan to carry it to your next PC. 560 is not a bad choice. Q6600 still has legs. I'd worry more about going too cheap and not seeing a good improvement over the 250 (which was not a bad card). Hopefully games will make better use of quad core and your Q6600 will be able to stretch it's legs.

Aside: If you grab a good card, then sometime later drop another $300-$350 into a sandy-bridge like i5-2500 plus MB plus memory then you'll have an excellent system.

Ok guys I must confess I'm kind of an old school gamer and I'm not much into the new scheme of things. It's been about 10 years since I started this stuff (When Napster was free! If you remember Napster). So why is the 560 Ti more expensive than the 560? Im just trying to get a hold of the new graphics cards. Like how the GTS 250 is just a remake of the 9800 GT. It's very confusing. Like I used to know the exact comparison for Nvidia vs Radeon Cards. Now I feel like a young child trying to figure out what the sun is. Thx for any input.

the 560ti has 8 graphics processing units, the 560 has only 7.

Ive read up on some of the stuff and it looks like, in my opinion, that anything less than a GTX 460 upgrade would be a waste of time. I like the reviews on the radeon cards but the comparison seems hard to read. It seems that the radeon is good in areas where the nvidia lacks and vice versa with the nvidia. So how does anyone get a good technical comparison?

Reply to incognito485

check reviews onn sites like Toms, Hard OCP, Anandtech, Tech Reports, Overclockers.Net, etc. They'll have direct comparisons between cards in a variety of games, video encoding, etc.
