i want to upgrade my processor and i have checked my motherboard and it tells me that the model is a M3A78-em/v it also says that his is a 940 chip set which according to asus is a am2, am2+ chip set. but i have a amd athlon ll x2 245 (regor) processor already installed and cpu-z tells me this is a socket am3 (938) package and on another program called core temp1.0 rc4 it tells me that my platform is a socket am3 (941 pin) i am a little confused here i would like to put in a quad core if possible like a Phenom II X4 965 - 3.4 Ghz AM3 Black Edition CPU, as i have just upgraded my graphic card to a shapphire HD 7850 and i think the processor is bottlenecking it,(by the way this is a bare bones set up. any advise would be most helpful thank you in advance

AM3 CPUs work on most AM2+ boards. AMD is nice and maintains compatibility.

It's on the support list but a bios update is required and you need to check your board version
