Hello,

I currently have a laptop with a p8400 core 2 duo cpu at 2.26ghz and an nvidia 9600m GS graphics card. I also have 2 gb ram expandable to 4 gb ram ddr3 800. My question is this: If I were to build a desktop, what proc / graphics card would I need in order to see a significant gaming performance? I was thinking about a G620 @ 2.6ghz with a 5770 and 8GB of Ram ddr3 1333. If I expanded the laptop to 4gb ram would there be a big difference in performance with the new system? If so, how much of a difference?

^+1. Meanwhile, here's a few articles to read. They show builds recently done by Tom's to meet a $500 and a $1,000 budget, not including screen, mouse, keyboard, speakers.

A desktop can always be constructed for less money than a laptop that will successfully run more games, and do it on a bigger screen.

The best you could do with a tight budget is to get a Quad core. The cheapest you can get is the AMD phenom ii x4. It's only $120.
