Will my onboard work?

I don't know very much about sound cards. My motherboard is the ASUS M5A97 with the onboard realtek audio. To purchase the Roccat kave headset, which is a 5.1 surround sound headset, will I need to get a different soundcard? I think the onboard soundcard is the Realtek ALC887, a 7.1. Again, will the onboard be compatible with the headset?
