AM3+ in an AM2+ socket?

some am3 cpus will work on am2+ mothebroards after a bios update.
what is your motherboad's brand and model?

As for my motherboard I would have to check, but according to Newegg it says my motherboard is the AMD 780G chipset (?), and note this comp came out in mid to late 2008 if that matters at all.

yes the 780g chipset will support am3 cpus, you will have to see exactly which ones.
