2500k overkill for sli gtx 460?

would a 2500k be pointless if put with sli gtx 460's? would i really notice that much difference if i used a phenom x4 or i3 2100?

Depends what you want them to do. How long do you think you'll keep the x2 460s. I never buy the best - usually get the best I can afford - keeps me happier longer. 2500k would be hard to pass on.

The 2500K would allow you to never be CPU limited. An i3-2100 works great for games though, and if you're looking to save a decent amount of money it'd be a solid upgrade.

The real thing to consider is how often you plan to upgrade. If you don't plan to upgrade for a year or two, get an i3 or low end i5 - Ivy Bridge and the LGA 2011 CPUs will be coming out by the time you want to upgrade any way.

Ivy Bridge is coming next year March 2012. Have you bought the 460s? I'd get a single card since the newer cards are supposed to be x2 faster than the old ones.

Everyone has told me to just wait on the next generation of cards but why when GTX 460 SLi does well enough in benchmarks to beat GTX 580 at times, and often keep up with GTX 590
