Athlon ii x2 260 for budget gaming pc

hey everyone, this is my first post, so yeh, lets get straight into it

I'm building a budget gaming pc, so far I've got the motherboard (am3 socket) and ram, and I was wondering if the athlon II x2 260 was a decent choice for a budget gaming CPU and also for schoolwork? I wont be doing too many CPU intensive stuff such as video rendering, adobe programs etc.

another thing, I will be overclocking whatever cpu I get too.

any extra thoughts/suggestions are welcome

oh nearly forgot, I'll probably be getting either a gts 450 or a gtx 550ti (motherboard accepts nvidia gpu's only), so would this bottleneck?

More about athlon budget gaming
  1. For the video card, a Radeon 6850 is a better choice and uses less power. You know, alot of AM3+ boards can do crossfire and sli. Also, if you go with a single slot board with an nVidia chipset you can still run a Radeon card on it just fine.

The Athlon 260 is fine a a budget CPU, but it's really worth it to spend a little more on an X3 like the 445.
  2. just collect $10 more and get one amd athon ii x3 455rana it can unlock to an 4th core AMD PHENOM2 X4 B55 and overclock till 3.7 ghz easily.:)

  3. here are the benchmark of amd athlon ii x2 265 vs amd athlon ii x3 455 rana @3.3ghz.:)

  4. it's a bit late for another motherboard, I've got an M4N98TD evo, and upon doing research, apparently it only accepts nvidia. the reason I got its cause it was for sale cheap on a local website for $70 with a single 1333mhz 4gb ram stick.
  5. your board will support AMD gpus as long as you don't need crossfire.
you should get an amd gpu as the lower end cards are better from AMD.
  6. thanks for the link sunnk

oh and I can't get stuff from newegg, I'm in australia
  7. that'd b great, I'd rather an amd gpu than an nvidia
  8. if ur from australia i got link from there u can buy it

+1 you should get one hd 6770 its perfoms better then gts 450 but if u are not sure that it will work or not so dont get amd gpu even the nvidia gpus also works great if u can then get an gtx 550 ti it will be good and perform little bit more then the hd 6770.:)
  10. wat if I buy the 6770 from MSY and if it doesn't work I'll just go get a refund saying it doesn't work with my motherboard?

anyone got suggestions for a case and psu? gotta be under $100, and btw msy here are selling Seventeam ST-505PCG psu's (im guessing they're 505w) for $39
  11. for the psu you want quality rather than watts.

a quality 300watt psu will power your system but even 600watt psus from a bad brand could be bad. Im not sure what will be good for you in aus.
  12. from wat I've heard seventeam are manufacturers for coolermaster, and if u mean wat brand types, I'm pretty sure theyre all the same in aus
  13. brands like corsair, seasonic will be better quality psu.:)
  14. buy this one instead of that this will be good in quality if u can afford http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/170797/POWERSUPPLIES_400W_-_499W/Corsair/CMPSU-430CXV2AU.asp

    or

    http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/124630/POWERSUPPLIES_400W_-_499W/Seasonic/PSUSEAS12II430W.asp

if u can then go for an seasonic one belive me this brand psu will be good and buy one of them if u can afford.:)
  15. so wat about about a corsair cx430? would that run a 6670, one hdd, one DVD drive, and the x3 455 (95w) with room for some upgrades later on?
  16. so wat about about a corsair cx430? would that run a 6670, one hdd, one DVD drive, and the x3 455 (95w) with room for some upgrades later on?
  17. yes the cx 430 can handle them.:)
  18. ill get the cx430, its only $58 at msy
  19. thanks man
  20. oh and how many 6-pins does it hav?
  21. your most welcome.:)
  22. but listen to me onething that if u can afford the seasonic one then go for it because its more better then the cx 430 but if u can afford that much then the cx 430 is better choice.:)
  23. alright seasonic I guess, then I'll save up later for a case, my birthdays comin up so I'm gonna get my family to buy me a few of the parts like the cpu, gpu, and either DVD drive or hdd.

    there's a seasonic S12-II 520 for $91 at msy, kind of a noob question but that'd b better right?

    msy parts list url
    www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf
  24. yes the s12-II 520 will be more better then that two and it has a 1x6pin,1x6+2 pin which can crossfire or sli two card:)
  25. so a 6+2 pin connector would still fit a gpu with a 6-pin?
  26. yes ofcouse the 6+2pin pcie connector will support 6pin gpu the 1x6pin and 1x6+2 pin look like this http://techreport.com/r.x/psus-0907/pcie-connectors.jpg.

single 6+2 pin look like this http://www.servercase.com/two+6pin-big.gif
  27. you don't need that since you won't ever be crossfiring as your board doesn't support it. get the cx for a lot cheaper.

but esrever if he will upgrade his mb then that psu will handle cfx, overclocking and unlocking of the core easily and i m not sure about the cx that it can do all that.
  29. i reckon I'll go for the seasonic, just to make it more future proof and save me having to buy another one for longer, if u know wat I mean

heres wat ill probably be getting for my build

    athlon ii x3 455
    ati radeon 6770
    seasonic s12-II 520w
    Seagate sata3 500gb
some sort of DVD RW drive
    a decent case
  30. you need ram ?
  31. that's wat I forgot hahaha, and a single stick Kingston 1333mhz ram, I got it with the mobo
  32. you have an 4gb 1333mhz ram which seems good and enough no need to upgrade more ram you will be fine with it.
  33. might want to upgrade ram eventually as you want 2 sticks so your ram can enable dual channel which will basically double the speed of ram access and improve your pc greatly.
  34. yeh cool
  35. ill upgrade once I get the money
  36. that will be also good to get more ram and two is more better then one when you get more money get more ram it will give your system an performance boost but for now one stick is ok.
  37. guess I'm settled then, its like, 10.30pm here and I got school tomorrow, so cyas, thanks again for the help
  38. your welcome and tommorrow my school is also there.
