Acer aspire x1200 CPU AM3 Upgrade

Introduction
-------------------------
I currently own a Acer aspire x1200 and i have done a some tweaks with it. I removed the Nvidia G100 and replaced with a very powerful card the Nvidia Gtx 650 (EVGA SC). Yet there is still a problem i am getting 1/4 of the performance out of it. So i looked at my cpu and there was the problem. :(

Problem
------------------------
In sort i don't have the cpu to use the card at its fullest so i looked at some upgrades. Here are my current specs:
CPU
AMD ATHLON 64 x2 5000+
2.6 ghz

Idea of a Fix
------------------------
My current motherboard has a AM2+ slot and heard if you update your BIOS it is possible to upgrade to a AM3 processor. So i looked at my manufacturer's website and found that i already have the latest version but they don't say much more info after that. (http://www.acer.ca/ac/en/CA/content/drivers)(BIOS=R01-B0)
That is all i got but if you have something to add or some info i missed please tell me! :)

Other info
------------------------
The new CPU that i looked at seemed to do the job (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1681...).

If your wondering about the GTX 650 and how i supplied it power i used a separate power supply and used a bobby pin. We tried hooking up the new power supply to my motherboard and everything else but got a black screen. Although we herd the beep and the fans were running, noticeably the CPU fan was going crazy(like 5 times the speed).

Last thoughts
-----------------------
My last option is to get a new motherboard. I kind of doubtful of the motherboard support it but there is always a chance right? :D
