Comm Ports

I recently bought a autron ( a device that connects to a cars computer and gives codes for engine lights) This device is spposed to be compatable with windows vista. I have downloaded the software. However when I connect the device to the computer the software tells me it can not connect the comm port the acutron is connected to. How do I find the comm ports, and how do I trouble shoot?
