you can go a lot cheaper for the motherboard for the AMD system.

for the 2400 you'd be looking at motherboards with lower features but you can easily fit it under $300 if you choose a cheap board

but if you want a better board with more features it will set you slightly over budget:

about $20 over budget but still within reason.

For new builds right now go intel. If you have to met a 300 price range a Llano build would be ok, but leaves you limited upgrade like with all AMD builds right now. only get the 2500k if you plan to OC if not you'd be fine saving 20-30 on the 2400-2500.

You know with my current setup I am OC'd but honestly with the EVGA 560 ti and 8gb of ram. Would i need to OC the i5 2500k to all the latest games at max settings with a high fps? or would i be totally fine without having to?

i suggest you go for a AMD build right now, and just buy a whole new system for an ivy build of i5 soon when you get the money, with 300$ + some old stuff that you have lyiing around can fetch you a nice amd build (if you have any lying around) even a cheap psu is good enough and some cheap gpu's, then when you get the money go for an i5, amd on such a budget would be good enough, i suggest amd phenom 960T if you can get your hands on it if not get those phenomII x2 which are cheaper and some nice cheap mobo a good cheap gpu like those 512mb ones and your good to go

Do you live near a micro center? Because if you do, they are currently selling the 2500k for about 179 last time I checked and you can pick up a nice $50 dollar saving off of any of their mobos when you buy them together. Total would be less than $300. I found out about micro center after I had built my computer. Sadface.

Here, just get yur 89.99 20$ less than newegg fx 6100 or phenom 2 x4 black edition at Microcenter, the fx may be the same price but its better here: http://www.microcenter.com/product/376784/FX_4100_Black... read da specs. Then, get a good 4gigs of ram a decent radeon or geforce graphics card under 100$, the motherboard fitting that core all at newegg last get the case and storage wherever you like. And youll need an optical drive to install your os so buy that too. Make sure it all fits and fits your budget.
