It frees memory that isn't really being used at the time so it can be ready for your next memory intensive move. It will speed you up if you have more than 96 MB of RAM probably. It takes about two seconds to clear the memory every time but then programs work faster when the memory is cleared, of course until it gets full again, which can happen pretty quick.
