Ivy bridge CPU on non z77 mobo?

I want to upgrade my laptop's CPU, but the motherboard only supports up to sandy bridge processors. I want to get an ivy bridge CPU, so my questions are...

1) will the cpu still work with the non z77 motherboard?
2) if so, what performance is lost due to this?

if the motherboard said to only support sandy bridge, an ivy bridge is not going to work at all.
