Upgrading a gaming pc for someone and was hoping you guys could help out picking between these two processors. I already have them in hand, just not sure which to go with.

He's going to be playing newer games like Skyrim.
PC will run 4gb of DDR2 PC2-6400 and will most likely never get upgraded again, so having support for DDR3 is irrelevant. Got him a radeon HD6570.

that "athlon II" is really a sempron if it's single core and this chart shows a comparison between a sempron at 2ghz vs the 64 x2 at 2.6ghz

The choice is the x2 even though its an older arch, it performs better, if you can unlock that single core to a dual core and can overclock it to 2.6 (should be pretty easy if it has a stable core) then the athlon II would be better. what motherboard is this using?

No problem!

If you have a 760 or higher motherboard chances are you can unlock the extra core on the athlon II making them both decent cpus. If it doesn't unlock then there is no harm in trying.

OC that Brisbane. You might get 3.2GHz out of it with a decent cooler, but even if you just get to 3.0 it's not a bad improvement ^_^

MEGAMAN I LOVE THAT GAME! Shame its all handheld now. They need a legends 3, which got put on hold indefinitely. The Legend of The Dragoon and Megaman, dead legendary games. Played every non handheld megaman game.

Unfortunately this compaq won't allow me to unlock or oc... and this x2 is running hot as it is, ~45c per core idle! Might need to clean the contact up again and reseat w/ some silver.

Yep, reapply if it doesn't get better temps try some different techniques for thermal paste. You could always get a good air cooler like the cm212 or corsair a70. You can usually find one of them for under $30.

Exactly, I always thought omega x was pretty cool even if he got stomped by zero
