Mix and match ram

hi all, i'm just wondering if it's ok to mix and match different brands or at least different models of ram in a system. i currently have a a dual channel 8gb kingston running at 1600 and wondered if i could throw in a different brand running at 1600 also. if i can is there a downside? or should i just stick to one brand one model? thanks for the help!

More about match
  1. Match with speed and timing of memory. Different brand will work.

Lets say the speed is the same, would a CL2.5 work with 3x CL3's?
  3. You may need to manually set cl. Many memory memory has different timings setting. It may work.

But buy ram with matching timings.
