Hey All,

I'm sure this kind of post pops up all the time on the forums but I figured I'd post just the same and see if anyone with a keen eye could help me up. I've run 3DMARK11 and have come back with a score of 4900 on the demo. Futuremark insists that this is a low score for my rig and it seems to pan out when I view the other results. What I'd like to do is post my system specs and:

1. Do you think that the 3d Mark score is a bit low for the components?
2. What can I do aside from overclocking to increase my rigs gaming performance?

Coolermaster Haf 922 Mid Tower ATX Case Black 5X5.25 5X3.5INT Front Audio USB eSATA No PSU
Coolermaster Megaflow 200MM Red LED Case Fan 700RPM

Intel Core i5 2500K Quad Core Unlocked Processor LGA1155 3.3GHZ Sandy Bridge 6MB

G.SKILL Ripjaws X F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Memory
Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 7200.12 1TB SATA 32MB Cache 3.5IN Internal Hard Drive OEM
Asus DRW-24B1ST 24X SATA DVD Writer OEM Black
Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E 2XDVI HDMI DisplayPort Video Card
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64BIT DVD OEM
Corsair Force 115 SSD

3. I'd be willing to try other benchmarks to see if I'm under performing.

Realize that the benchmarks submitted to 3dmark etc are from many who are competitively overclocking their rigs.

What you should care about is how your rig performs in YOUR games.

Install fraps and monitor the frame rate for your games.
If they are over 30, you are playable.
If they are 60 you are fine, and some games will artificially limit the fps to 60.

You bought a "K" so you should do at least minimal overclocking.
Gradually raise the multiplier until you get to 40 or so, leaving all voltages on auto. That will be safe.

First of all,

I'd like to take a minute and recognize Geofelt as my patron saint of computer hardware; every request I've had, no matter how trivial or newbish, he's answered gracefully and with every good intention. I don't follow every thread on here but I can say from my experience that he's a good chap.

I'd set about overclocking my processor, but I don't know my ass from my ankles when it comes to overclocking and I'm deadly afraid of damaging my equipment. I wouldn't know the first thing about going about overclocking it, all the extra precautions I'd have to take, what I'd have to disable and enable, what would be a safe setting, etc. It's all incredibly daunting to me. I know I have an excellent cooling system but I don't know what I'm doing re: overclocking. Not that I wouldn't mind trying.

if you want to overclock, then you could follow a guide like this one - http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/ove [...] nners.html

------------------------------ PC: i5-2500k, ASRock Extreme3, 8GB DDR3-1600, XFX 6870, 90GB Corsair Force 3, Corsair 600W
HTPC: Athlon II X2 240, 2GB DDR3-1333, ASUS M4A785TD-M EVO, WD 200GB HDD, Earthwatts 380
File Server: Gigabyte GA-D525TUD, 1GB DDR3-1066, 8GB CF-IDE, 2TB Storage

I'll take a read through this and see if I can make heads or tails of it and see where I end up. I just don't know what kind of FPS / Gameplay increase to see from overclocking and if the overclock would be worth the risk. But, like Geo says, I should probably overclock it since I spent a couple of extra dollars on the K model. I'll let you know how it goes.

well, if you read the beginning part of the guide it explains a bunch of stuff to you and shows you how to do a very basic overclock with an ASUS board. If you don't want to take a big risk, just stop after you do the simple overclock. Obviously yours will be slightly different but at least you'll know what to look for.
