Did you install Bit-torrent from hdd. Even after installing os again, virus will be remain in other partition with software and and .exe file. If you install from that affected software then virus will spread again. After installing os you should install antivirus from safe media, like backup disk, and scan whole hard drive.

I think it virus which is freezes your pc. After install windows, scan with anti-virus, not only anti-maleware. Anti-virus and Anti-malware are not same.

There are many free anti-virus, like Microsoft security essential, AVG, Avast etc. Or you can buy Kaspersky, it will be good. They may be help to detect virus if their any.

If you format whole HDD then you must scan your backup external hdd or format it too. There may be virus affected file which can spread to your pc again. So scanning backup hdd with anti-virus is strongly recommended after installing os.
