Connecting pc to laptop by Ethernet cable

hi guys
i have a laptop which can use wireless and i have a desktop pc which i want to connect by the Ethernet cable for some reason it isnt connecting the net but it can connect the two computers, its not the cable.

You say it's not the cable but if it's working when connecting the two computers directly (i.e. not via the router) it may be a crossover cable. This type may or may not work as a connection between the router and a computer.

umm its worked with the same cable before but it then stopped
