Some USB connectors only recognise some USB sticks??

I have a Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit installation on an Intel DP55KG board.
The eight USB ports routed to the back panel connectors recognise all USB sticks, but the front USB connectors of my PC routed to the on-board headers, only recognise some of these USB sticks, although they all these seem to be formatted as FAT32.
Does anyone have a clue as to why?
I have even used my PC to format one offending USB stick when inserted to a back panel connector, then re-inserted it into the front connector and it still is not detected!
Yet the same front connector will happily recognise other USB sticks formatted the same way!
I repeat, does anyone have any clues as to why?

More about some connectors recognise sticks
  1. how old's the case?

I recall having an issue with some usb extenders and some reason, it was picking up the extender as being USB 1.1 which doesnt work on some flash drives.. aparently..

So, if you have a USB 1.1 usb extender and your flash drive is strictly 2.0.. it wont work.. even though i though 2.0 was backwards compatible..
