Can someone please explain why HD prices suddenly skyrocketed?

And I want to get more Samsung Spinpoints for my HTPC setup - but I just cant seem to find any anywhere, and the price of the 2TB hard drive I wanted to get nearly doubled in the last month. I heard that Samsung sold off its' HD division to Seagate - is that true?

And what is the reasoning for HD prices being the way they are now? Does it have to do with fallout from the Japan quake or is it something else entirely?

I heard it'll take anywhere from 3-6 months for the factories to be back to running at full speed again.

If you want amazon closely, you'll see some prices dip. In the past week I've seen it spinpoint go from $65-->$80-->$65-->$90. If you don't have that kind of time, I think newegg would have the best prices moving forward.

yeah, it's the flooding... kinda pissed me off, was about to buy a HDD at 65 dollars, and the next day they are at 120... oh well, hope all is well in Thailand soon enough.
