The difference is only 200MHz (3.1GHz vs. 3.3GHz), so not really.

However, paying $40 more will get you the i5-2500k. It is also clocked at 3.3GHz, but it's core multiplier is unlocked which means you can overclock it. Most people seems to be able to get 4.5GHz without any problems.

You will need a motherboard with a P67 or Z68 chipset and you also need to buy another CPU heatsink (cooler) since that stock Intel heatsink will not be able to deal with the additional heat. Therefore, you also need to take into consideration the additional money you will be spending for these items. I believe the average P67 motherboard costs around $30 - $40 more than the H61 / H67 motherboard and a good heatsink will cost around $30 - $40.

So... assuming you were going to buy an inexpensive H61 / H67 chipset motherboard to begin with, the total cost to get the best out of a Core i5-2500k will probably cost around $120 (including the i5-2500k itself).
