8 pin Connector too short?

My cousin is building his first pc, hes hooking hooking up the mobo as I write this. The 8 pin connector is too short by an inch or so and even when stretched covers the pci express slots. There is a 8 to 4 pin extender but i'm afraid it wont provide enough power. (FX 8320, 7770 GHZ edition.)
Is it possible to use the 4 pin or should I tell him to just buy an extender?
