Hello All,
I would like to get some ideas of what book or books would be your
choice to buy. I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy a Nikon D70 so I would
like a book that helps me to understand the controls and functions of
a camera with the D70's capabilities.
The second book I would like to purchase would be one that explains
the intricacies of using Photoshop to edit pictures. if not Photoshop,
what program would you recommend?

"Adobe Photoshop CS for Photographers" by Martin Evening form Focal Press
The book is targeted at photographers, well written with some good tutorials
on the companion cd. It does assume some prior knowledge, but not to any
unmanageable depth.
Sits next to my computer together with the Adobe manual :-)

I just took a class on Photoshop from a working professional who is one
of the best in the southeast. He said first of all that the Canon
digital cameras are amazing, and second to none. He uses the 1ds, but I
would tend to choose the 20D over the Nikon.
The second thing I learned was that shooting in RAW is the only way to
go, for quality and being able to fine adjust white balance and
everything else without destroying any pixels.
In my practice at home on some of my worse images, not shot in RAW, I
have found that Photoshop CS is not able to adjust white balance in any
sophisticated way (except in RAW). In Photoshop Elements 3, I can place
an eyedropper on an area that is supposed to be white or neutral, and it
will automatically color balance the entire image.
I have Martin Evening's book as well, but none of these books seem to go
into the points I learned in the class, such as non-destructive editing
by working in layers exclusively in a way that does not touch the
original and in which you can go back any step of the way to a previous
point. I don't know if there is an ideal book out there, but I would
suggest taking a class from a working pro. Preferably portrait or wedding.
