i see people quite happy with a i3 2100 and a GTX 580, its pretty much that same thing, so yeh, go for it

  • fx 4170 is rumored to be the revised version of fx 4100. fx 4xxx series is 2 module 4 core cpu.
  • amd gfx cards run better with intel cpus e.g. 2x 6950 will run better with a core i5 2500k (4 core) than with an fx 6100 (3 module 6 core).
  • fx 4170 performance is mostly speculation right now, as amd's work on the unreleased cpu is unknown (afaik). wait for it to launch and get tested. iirc it was supposed to launch in march. fx 6200 was supposed to launch this month but i cannot find it anywhere.

if it has the same issues as the other cpus in the range then its single threaded performance will be an issue, especially on games that use 2 or less threads on a sli or xfire setup. the chance of bottlenecks is a possibility but you will be able to get the power you need in most cases by applying a hefty oc...

to be honest it doesn't make any sense to put 2 higher end gpus in with a budget cpu. no matter if its intel or amd. as you will always end up running short of cpu grunt eventually. its better to buy a strong cpu initially and get a second card later if you think you need it... most games dont need more than 1 high end gpu anyway to run 1080p if your happy with a minimum of 30fps at max (4xfsaa) settings.

6850 are midrange cards, a fx4170 @ 4.6 should have no problem driving them.

all graphics cards will work better with i5 than bulldozer, nt only amd

its only a mild performance gain over nvidia due to the way amd gpus use threading. its not even 1 percent so i dont see why you keep banging on about it... you will get pretty much the same performance on an equal amd say a 960 and a q6800 with an ati card but you would get a slight gain with the intel and nvidia over the amd and nvidia due to better use of intels threading.

if it was a huge gain then people would actually care about it, but because its so small they dont...

of course it will work man, i have X3 455@3.8 and this CPU just runs my 2xHD6850 just at 70% of capacity, so FX-4170 is better CPU, you should be fine man even with no overclock.

im waiting and im gonna buy propably the same CPU as u

I was personally given a FX-4170 via an AMD rep for testing and OC purposes, had it since december but just now got the board and other components paid for and waiting to be put together. I also purchased 1 HD6850. The main purpose of this build is to OC and see much above 5Ghz i can get it. I will be running dual SSD and eventually Dual 6850's, only have 1 6850 now because im more focused on the OCing. I will let youknow how it goes over the weekend......

the FX cpu is a bottleneck, they are poor gaming cpu's period, doesn't matter how much you overclock them. It still surprises me, after all the overwhelming evidence showing clearly that the FX cpu's are poor, that people still hold on to some delusionary belief that they are good. Add to that there are no upgrade hopes for them and you have a pretty poor platform. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/fx-4100-core-i3-210... have a read of this article. Its pretty clean that when you go above a single 6850, the cpu becomes a bottleneck.

6850 crossfire nears and sometimes beats 5870 crossfire.

Considering 5870 CF is bottlenecked by OCd Phenom II I'd say the FX is going to bottleneck slightly.
