CD Writer + CD Rom

If I buy a new system with a CD Writer , is it still necessary to have a regular CD-Rom drive as well ?

It is not REQUIRED, but it is recommended. All CD-ROMs and CD-RWs have a limited life, and the one on CD-RWs would be used up a lot faster if you're using it for regular CD-ROM purposes. A regular CD-ROM will also give you better performance in terms of reading. If you want to copy CDs, then a regular CD-ROM would make it much more convenient.
