GTX 580 SLI

Hello all

Just bought a new rig (Alienware Aurora R3) which has 1 x Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 which is bloody fantastic.

Being a bloke however I feel I must make it BIGGER & BETTER!!! lol

Have ordered a second gtx 580 to run SLI.

I'm hoping someone learned in these topics may be able to answer a few questions for me.....

Will 875w PSU be enough for these? (I'm thinking probably not)

If not what are my options, other than OEM, for alienware machines? Are there any options other than OEM for Alienware?

Is it possible to run a second PSU from one of the 5.25-inch external drive bays?


I'm sure someone will have done something similar to this so look forward to your replies.

If it's a quality 875w unit then you're good to go. I'm not sure what you're trying to ask with your second question. Alienware machines are Dell's high-end gaming OEM line, are you thinking about building your own? So to answer your question as written, no, there are no other options aside from OEM from Alienware, because Alienware = OEM. And you can always run another PSU from a 5.25" bay, though they're expensive, so I'd just recommend getting a new ~1200w PSU if that's the road you wanna go down.

I meant OEM power supplies..... do I have to use Alienware PSUs on this machine?

Ooooohhhh, no, you do not. Can you find out who made it? How many PCI-e connectors does it have?

The cards themselves are 'only' going to need about 500w to run the pair of them, after that just add the rest of the hardware to see how much power you need.
