Help usb ports not working

Hello,
My USB ports on my laptop suddenly stopped recognizing any hardware I have connected to it. I've been trying to use my printer/scanner and a camera. I've tried all three ports and none of them are working. I don't know what to do and I don't have money to have an expert try to figure it out. Please, someone help me. I'm trying to look for a job and need to scan and send my aptitude test scores to a potential employer. Thank you.-Nicole

It's possible the portion of the chip that controls the USB ports has failed. Let's hope not. Try cleaning your system with CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner . Run the Clean and Registry both. Make sure you have a good virus program running. I like MSE http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials
Run a virus scan. Also, you could try a restore to an earlier time when the ports were working. Run System Restore to do that. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/
