I have been looking for a moderate gaming computer to run Flight Sim X and was wondering how much memory would be optimum. I see some already built systems by Dell including the XPS 8500 and the Alienware X51 that have 8, 12 and 16MB of 1600 memory. What would be a good sweet spot? I dont' want to buy more than I will need.

Hi,

I have run Flight Sim X on one GB of ram no problem. What else are you going to use the system for?

You don't want to spend $2000 for an alienware system if you are not going to make use of it.

Have anything above 2gB and set it up in dual/triple/quad channel whatever you have. 4 gB For dual and quad channel, and 3gb for triple channel.

Sorry didn't respond earlier because I wasn't notified. I plan on using it for typical web browsing, reports and occasionally Flight Sim X. My previous system ran Flight Sim X with a Pentium IV at 3.2 mhz 3MB, 160HD and a X850 Radeon card but I want to be able to turn up the settings and eventually add multiple monitors. I was torn between an Ibuy System and a local custom maker but found some XPS 8500 and X51 on Dell Outlet but they sold fast. I got a X51 with I7 3.4 Mhz, 8MB, 2TB and the X555 video card shipped for 799 off of Ebay fact refurb so I hope that will do for now.
