So far I purchased two 12:1 USB card readers to use with my Mac. Both
readers clearly stated on the display cards, Mac OS X compatible but
when I brought them home the software stated otherwise -not compatible
with Mac. Has anyone bought a USB card reader that reads Smart Media
cards and works with the Mac. What brand, model, where.

Did you try using it with iPhoto? Try using iPhoto's Import feature to get
images off if it.

Please, no "Go Google this" replies. I wouldn't
ask a question here if I hadn't done that already.

I've bought several - and all worked fine with the Mac.
What does your do?
If it doesn't work, I'd take it back. It's probably defective. But
first, make sure you're plugging it into the computer or a powered hub
and not the keyboard.

With OSX you should not need any extra software, USB support is built in.
What happens when you put a card in and plug it in?

Hmmm. I have an ancient Delkin card reader that came bundled with some
CoolPix accessories from Nikon. Works fine for me but DOES require a
driver. (OS X supports USB but card readers usually require a driver)
Have you checked your manufacturers website? It's not uncommon to
include the PC drivers but make you download the Mac ones.
