Hey all! I hope everyone's well :)

Basically, i would like to upgrade my pc, but i have Battlefield 3 running pretty well on my computer, and also Crysis 2. What i want to know is, do i need these upgrades, or do i just want them? In what ways will they benefit me? And also, what is the best software for measuring temps and recording fraps etc, preferably free software :)

This is my current set up:

Dell XPS 420 Motherboard (BTX)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz 4MB Cache 1333FSB
Antec 650w PSU
Samsung Blu Ray Drive
500GB Hard drive
4gb DDR2 RAM
XFX Radeon HD 6870 1GB GDDR5
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit

I would ideally like to upgrade my processor and my ram. To achieve this, i also need to buy a new motherboard, which will then require a new case, as the Dell XPS 420 uses a BTX motherboard.

I was looking at the following components:
Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor
251596-intel-core-i5-2500k-3-3ghz-socket-1155-6mb-cache-retail-boxed-processor-bx80623i52500k

G-Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V RAM
http://www.ebuyer.com/264750-g-skill-8gb-2x4gb-ddr3-160...

Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3-B3 Socket 1155 7.1 Channel Audo ATX Motherboard
http://www.ebuyer.com/269125-gigabyte-ga-z68a-d3-b3-soc...

Casecom 6788 All Black Case
http://www.ebuyer.com/172779-casecom-6788-all-black-cas...
Will all of my components fit into this case ok?

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 Socket 775, 1156, 1155, 1366, AM2, AM3 Heatpipe CPU Cooler
http://www.ebuyer.com/176157-arctic-cooling-freezer-7-p...

But with all of these, i would cost me £340, do i need these upgrades, or do i just want it? I would love to upgrade and have a fantastic PC, but because of the stupid Dell's motherboard, i would need to buy it all in one go. I can afford it, but i would have to tighten up with my other purchases for the remainder of the month. Would it make my PC a lot better?

What do you all recommend? Any advice would be brilliant! :)

Thanks all,

Alex

i found one gaming benchmark that compared these two or nearly did. the processor compared is like one model above yours. the game is Left 4 Dead, the resolution was at 1680x1050, with Medium settings
the 2500k did 213.00 fps and the core 2 quad did 127.70
so for games that are processor intensive it is worth it but i know battlefield 3 isnt processor intensive, not sure about crysis 2. i know rage is, if thats one of your goals.

yes the upgrade gives you much benefits especially with intel core i5 2500k all of your games will run on maxed out with gtx 570 or hd 6960 your upgrade will be alot better than your old one pc.

for recording always use fraps this one is good and have more features.i link you torrent because it is free and full.

The Freezer 7 isn't right. Go 212 EVO or Xigmatek SD1283.

A 2500K will be overpowered for your 6870, which would get by fine on an X4 955, but it'll set you up pretty well for future upgrades.

What resolution are you playing at? Consider a new monitor if the answer is less than 1680x1050.

The above comments both assume a better graphics card than the one you have. You'll see big improvements, but you won't max out games on a 6870.

Thanks for the quick replys guys,

So you reckon it's worth spending £340 on all these upgrades to make my computer sweet?! :)

What other awesome games are there to play aswell, as i have an xbox 360 and most of my games are on that, but i'd like to use my PC much more.

Like i say, i really do want the i5 2500K, but i have to get everything else, i might just treat myself and buy it all!

Would you if you were in my shoes, seeing as i don't really play all that much....yet :p

Thanks guys,

Alex

Kajabla,

I can max out Battlefield 3 on my 6870 and it runs pretty well, so with a processor upgrade, then it should run better, correct?

I only just purchased the 6870, and i did so because it was topping my price range, which cards are better for around £150ish?

BLIMEY! Just used the CoreTemp software, and my temps for my CPU are at around 50 degrees IDLE!

I think i need to change my PC...

bf3,skyrim,rage,nfs the run,metro2033,cod mw2,3,god of war 3,farcry3,assassin creed3 are the newest games

I also forgot to add, i play at 1920 x 1080, 1080p :)

And as for the cooler, why isn't the arctic freezer right? The coolermaster 212 seems like another alternative, but will it fit in my case? and the fan doesnt actually blow onto the chip does it? it sit's differently to the arctic cooler?

Thanks,

Alex

the arctic freezer is good but hyper 212+ is much good it will push your cpu to 4.6ghz something, and yes it will fit in your case easily.

Cool, so all in all, you reckon i should spend the £340 to upgrade? Then will i be a happy chappy? :)
October 30, 2011 6:30:12 PM

yahhh!
October 30, 2011 6:57:56 PM

Yeah, the Freezer 7 does several degrees worse.
By "max" I mean a fairly consistent 60 fps. You can probably get 30.
October 30, 2011 7:53:05 PM

Ha ha, i might just have to do this then! Will it pick up the FPS a bit? I ran Fraps while playing BF3 on high and ultra, on High, i'm getting around 50FPS and on Ultra about 30, will the upgrades pick this up a bit? I'm not too fussed about the FPS because most console games are limited to 30FPS anyway, so my pc will still blow them away :p

I'll have a look at the coolermaster then i reckon, i just don't know if i can bring myself to fork out that much money in one go! :(  it's such a hard decision! :(

Yes, you'll see improvements. Whether it's worth it is up to you.
October 30, 2011 8:08:12 PM

Hmmm, what's your rig like? And what games you playing at the moment? It's just i don't want to buy it, and then be like, owh man! lol. My current processor is poop though! I might order it all tomorrow, and have it by tuesday. How long will it take to set it all up, about an hour?
October 30, 2011 9:12:18 PM

My rig? It's in my profile, and not as nice as yours will be.
You won't see an enormous difference (a 955 would probably give you the same results), but you'll be able to easily upgrade your GPU in the future without having to buy a new CPU. This is probably a good investment.

Hey guys!

So, I decided I'm going to bite the bullet and spend the £340 on new upgrades! YEAH! However, I probably am willing to spend a little bit more, so is there anything else i need or tweaks I could make to my current selections? Do I need to buy anymore fans for my case? Shall I invest in a better case? A better cooler? Any advice within the next 2.5 hours would be great as that's when I'm ordering.

Thanks guys,

Alex
